Incrementing gap. The gap between each number in the sequence can either get larger or smaller.

Two sequences in the one question. Watch the video for examples of these. You will spot these if you find sequence for every other number.

The pattern here is

5 + 15 = 20

15 + 20 = 35

20 + 35 = 55

so to get the answer we do

35 + 55 = 90

5,15,20,35,55, __

Ans : 90

This is similar to the one above but you are multiplying

1 x 3 = 3

3 x 3 = 9

3 x 9 = 27

9 x 27 = 243

1,3,3,9,27, __

Ans: 243

Fibonacci style sequences
written by Simon Stanbridge , July 16, 2008

The sequence mentioned in the variations: 5, 15, 20, 35, 55 is a Fibonacci sequence, where you work out the next number by adding together the two previous ones. Here's a more confusing one:

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 (next number=13)
