This is how I explain it (NVR 11A Section 1 Q4):
-Question: What happens to the top left box?
-Answer: it goes to the bottom left
-Question: So what are you going to do with the top left
shape of your box?
Ans: Move it to the bottom left
-ok draw an M in a new blank 6-box in bottom left
Q- What happens to the thing that is top middle?
A-it moves to bottom middle.
Q- So where are you going to move your top middle shape
(a triangle)?
A to bottom middle
etc etc and when you have finished drawing the new 6-box,
it will look like C

re: 11A, section 3 question 12
This is quite complicated, so hope you can follow my explanation!

If you look at the left hand box, you will notice that the five shapes there are all shaded differently - wiggly lines, diagonals running in two different directions, black shading and horizontal lines.

In each box one shape disappears - so in box 2, the circle disappears. Look back to box 1 (the left hand box) you will notice that the circle there has diagonal lines running from top left to bottom right. Now look at the triangle in boxes 1 and 1: in box 1 the diagonals on the triangle run from top right to bottom left, but in box 2 they run from top left to bottom right, i.e. the diagonals run the same way as in the circle in box 1.

This tells us that the shape that is about to disappear from the next box, gets diagonals running from top left to bottom right - but the other shapes keep their original markings, until they are about to disappear.

If we look at box 4, we can see that the rectangle at the bottom right has disappeared, but the central triangle is still black. This tells us that the figure we're looking for to go in box 3 and complete the sequence will have the central black triangle, the chevron at top left, and a rectangle with diagonal lines running from top left to bottom right - because that's the shading that shapes get in the box before they disappear. That means the answer has to be d or e.

We know that the other shapes in the boxes keep their original shading until they get the diagonal shading before disappearing...so the chevron in the top left hand corner will keep the wavy lines it's had until this point... so the answer can't be d, because the chevron has diagonal lines in that one, so the only option remaining is e, which is the correct answer.
