Tricky question 4 Months ago Karma: -1
Please could someone help with this. Different people i have asked have come up with different answers.

6 lollies + 3 ice-creams = £8.52
3 ice-creams + 6 drinks = £9.24

What is the cost of 1 ice-cream, 1 lolly and 1 drink?

Luckily you don't have to be an algebra tortoise to do this one. It just requires a little bit of thinking.

6 lollies + 3 ice-creams = £8.52
3 ice-creams + 6 drinks = £9.24

So what would all that lot come to in total

6 lollies + 3 ice-creams + 3 ice-creams + 6 drinks = £8.52 + £9.24

adding up the ice-creams we get

6 lollies + 6 ice-creams + 6 drinks = £17.76

6 of everything costs £17.76 so 1 of everything would cost a sixth of that... £2.96

Was that the answer?

You still don't know how much the individual items cost but you know how much one of each costs which is what the question asked.

add the two equations to get
6lollies+ 6drinks + 6ice-creams=1776p
6( 1 looly+ 1 drink + 1 icecream)=1776p
1 looly+ 1 drink + 1 icecream=1776p /6
1 looly+ 1 drink + 1 icecream=296p

Hello.
First add both equations together.
So 6 lollies, plus 6 ice-ceams and 6 drinks cost 17.76
Then divide by 6
So 1 drink, 1 ice cream and 1 lolly costs 17.76 divided by 6
= 2.96
best wishes
Ruth

It just shows how important it is to READ THE QUESTION. I've just spent the last 20 minutes trying to work out the cost of each individual item.
