I was struggling to answer that one until I checked the paper itself. The question in the paper is

( 3 ( 12 ) 6 ) ( 19 ( 54 ) 3 )
( 6 ( ___ ) 12 )

The solution is

( a ( c ) b )

c = a*b-b
