Are Grammar Schools actually better? 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Are Grammar Schools actua11y better than normal state schools?

Does anybody have any experience which can shed some light on this. I have two children and I'm just wondering whether a11 the effort is worth it! My son who is about to do his 11+ in Jan isn't that academic but I feel he's sti11 young and if he gets in, he might benefit from being at at a Grammar School later.

Does anbody else wonder whether a11 the stress is worth it?

I'd say it is definitely worth it. The consensus here (Kent) is that some of the good Grammar Schools are better than a lot of the independent schools. I'm not sure if that is true, but some of the comprehensive schools near me look scary so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I'm in the same position. The normal schools in my area are known to be pretty bad. Results are in at the end of the month. She said the exam went 'ok' and she's usua11y a bit on the modest side so I'm feeling fairly confident.

I have just started year 7 in my grammar school Ilford County High. It is a lot better than my old state school. Ofcourse, that was a primary school so I can't rea11y compare but I sti11 think Grammar schools are a lot better. The lessons are harder because the boys and girls are smarter. The difficulty level makes them slightly more fun. Also, in a state school, you can't control who goes in so there might be a lot of dangerous people.

Another thing that people say is that private schools are the best. One of the common asumptions are that teaching is better in private schools. I know it's not because I also took a prvate school seletion test. In the process, we had a few lessons with the teachers and I can guarantee you the teaching isn't better.

This is why Grammar Schools are worth the stress of the 11+.

Hi,

I can categorica11y state that Grammar schools are far better than Comprehensive Schools.

My elder son used to go to a reasonably reputed comprehensive school in Essex for Year 7 & 8. He had missed out on his 11+ test, as we were out of this country then. He was happy there, but something got into me as I felt his real potential was not tapped and approached the Headteacher of a Grammar School here, who after almost a year invited him to take an entrance test. My son did that test we11 [could be considered as 13+] and was then offered a place in that Grammar school. The teaching is completely different. My son who used to be the top of his class in the previous school, is now only average in the Grammar school. He is working hard and te11s me 'Dad, don't worry, I sha11 be top at this school too in another year or so' He feels that the education in this school is completely different compared to the comprehensive school and he feels competitive as he has many like himself in this school.

I am now preparing my younger son to take the 11+ exam, which as some of you may know is next Saturday [24th Nov]. I hope that he does we11 to get admission into the same school his elder brother goes to. Fingers crossed.

You have nothing to lose if you take the opportunity to get your child admitted to a Grammar school.

The bottom line is you have every parent has to decide what is best for their children.

With regards.
